Annual Recognition Breakfast 2010 Award Recipient

Elaine Van Avery
Elaine Van Avery has served as the Recycling Educator for OCRRA (Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency) in Onondaga County and City of Syracuse schools for 11 years.

She has introduced thousands of children of all ages to the concept and meaning of Recycling and instilled in students that a commitment to this endeavor is an act of citizenship and stewardship in which all citizens can participate with little or no formal training.

She has developed programs appropriate for students from Kindergarten through High School, as well as special programs requested by certain teachers. In the classroom visits, she emphasizes the importance of reducing and reusing as well as the importance of wise buying in the first place. She explains to children that "the type of garbage we produce is dictated the types of things we buy and bring into our house", and weaves interrelationships between Recycling and other environmental concerns whenever possible.

With Kindergarten children she discusses litter and its impact on nature. First graders get their first introduction to recycling embedded in a rather absurd fairy tale story. In second grade, students learn in detail the rules of paper recycling. In 3rd grade, the actually make recycled paper. In 4th and 5th grades, they learn at a more sophisticated level the "Twelve Really Simple Rules of Recycling". In 6th grade students are exposed to a variety of activities which enable them to think about reducing their trash and making wise decisions regarding purchasing (or encouraging their parents to do so.)

Elaine's teaching style is to make the activity fun, to be very "hands-on", and to introduce at least one or two new concepts which encourage one to think. Students are always encouraged to question my statements and to ask questions of their own.

Elaine is often called "The Trash Lady" by young students who comment that they know her from other schools and hope that she remembers them (which she does!)

She has no idea how she ended up in this field of work! She is a certified teacher in the State of New York with a degree in Political Science and two Masters Degrees- one in Experimental Psychology and one in Elementary and Secondary Education. Elaine says her love of children keeps her "young, happy, and on her toes."
